چکیده

How do frictions in asset markets a¤ect business cycle dynamics? This paper argues that imperfect risk-sharing among heterogeneous households, due to frictions in asset markets, ampli…es price stickiness endogenously and consequently increases the persistence and volatility of business cycles. The main economic mechanism is an idiosyncratic wealth e¤ect on individual household’s labor supply. This result provides a way to understand two con‡icting observations based on macro and micro data: (1) The model is able to generate persistent aggregate dynamics, being consistent with micro evidence of frequent price adjustments. (2) The model is consistent with large elasticity of aggregate labor supply as well as small elasticity of individual labor supply. I am greatly indebted to Chris Sims for his valuable advice. I also thank Nobuhiro Kiyotaki, Ricardo Reis, Sam Schulhofer-Wohl, Lars Svensson, Per Krusell, Roberto Chang, Tack Yun, Jinil Kim, Jonathan Heathcote, Carlos Carvalho, Jae Sim, Woong Yong Park, and participants of seminars at Princeton, Rutgers, Ohio State, Indiana, UC-Davis, Georgetown, FRB-Boston and the Federal Reserve Board for helpful comments and discussions. A part of this project was completed while I was visiting the FRB. I wish to thank the International Finance Division of the FRB for its hospitality.

Openness and the Output-Ination Tradeo¤

Standard open economy models predict that openness to trade should exert a positive e¤ect on the slope of the output-in‡ation tradeo¤, or Phillips curve, but such a proposition …nds very little support in the existing empirical literature. We propose a new test of this hypothesis based on new measures of the slope of the Phillips curve and more general cross-country regression models. The resul...

Monetary policy with heterogeneous households and imperfect risk-sharing

a r t i c l e i n f o a b s t r a c t This paper considers a sticky-price model with heterogeneous households and financial frictions. Financial frictions lead to imperfect risk-sharing among households with idiosyn-cratic labor incomes. I study implications of imperfect risk-sharing for optimal monetary policy by documenting its impacts on the monetary transmission mechanism, the inflation– ou...

Business cycles in Iran: Evidence from asymmetry and correlated shocks

In this Paper, business cycle asymmetry in Iran has been investigated using a nonlinear unobserved component model. In this regard, according to Kim and Nelsonchr('39')s (1999) interpretation of Friedman plucking model (1993), asymmetric transitory component has been modeled and simultaneously the possibility of a correlation between transitory and permanent shocks has also been considered. The...

Trade, Production Sharing and the International Transmission of Business Cycles

This paper is motivated by three observations about the link between international trade and international business cycle synchronization: (1) a large increase in trade in manufactures over the last 30 years, (2) a larger fraction of trade between core and periphery regions relative to core regions is in the form of production sharing, (3) crosscountry output correlations have increased between...

Dating Business Cycle in Oil Exporting Countries

In this paper, we empirically investigate the relationship between oil price changes and output in a group of oil exporting countries. The dynamics of business cycles in Libya, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, Kuwait, Venezuela and Qatar are modeled by alternative regime switching models. We show that the extension of uni-variate Markov Switching model in order to include oil revenue improves dating busi...
